Funding Interests:Jewish Life

The Jewish tradition celebrates a rich spiritual and cultural heritage, which includes promoting values that encourage concern about, and active engagement in, social issues affecting both Jews and non-Jews.

The Fund focuses its grantmaking on programs that foster and strengthen the connection of Jews to their heritage and community, in the interest of ensuring the continuity of the Jewish tradition. To this end, the Fund makes grants that:

  • Promote an appreciation for Jewish history, art, and culture;

  • Enhance spiritual fulfillment through Jewish religious study, belief, and practice;

  • Engage Jews in social action, consistent with the Jewish imperative of tikkun olam (repairing the world).
Within this area, Gaia Fund gives strongest preference to programs serving the Jewish community of the city of San Francisco. Additional preference is given to projects that have the potential to be expanded to other locales. The Fund may, on occasion, award grants for regional or national initiatives if they are judged to have a particular local relevance.

The Fund does not consider requests for initiatives based in Israel, for programs that provide direct social services, or for Holocaust-related projects.
